When do You Need to get Your Guard Card?
In California, you need to get a Guard Card if you work for a licensed Private Patrol Operator (PPO) and you provide services as a security guard. Bodyguards are considered security guards in CA. Active and retired Peace Officers (Police Officers) are also required to have Guard Cards, if they are working as security guards when not on duty as Peace Officers.
To check if your license is current and valid, call the BSIS License Verification Hotline at (916) 575-7000, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or your Guard Card can also be checked online at the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services website.
